Today’s Mission
What is Andy’s good news?
Conversation A(Andy comes into Sally’s shop.)
Sally: Hi, Andy. What’s up?
Andy: Well, I have good news and bad news. My sister is
getting married.
Sally: Is that the good news or the bad news?
Andy: The good news. I’m very happy for her.
Sally: Then what’s the bad news?
Andy: I have to go to the wedding.
Sally: Don’t you want to go?
Andy: Yes. But I don’t want to fly there.
Sally: Can’t you drive? Or take the train?
Andy: Not to Hawaii.
Conversation B
Sally: She’s getting married in Hawaii?
Andy: Yes. She thinks it will be romantic.
Sally: I’m sure it will be. And you should be there.
Andy: I know. But I hate to travel. Especially by plane.
Sally: Why? I think it’s kind of fun.
Andy: But something always goes wrong.
Sally: No, it doesn’t. My trip to San Francisco was just
fine.
Andy: Well, something will happen to me. I’ll get delayed
or miss my flight or something.
Conversation C
Sally: Everything will be just fine, you’ll see.
Andy: You’re right. We’ll see.
Sally: Why don’t you go and see Tony? He can help you make
your travel arrangements.
Andy: I was going to do that this afternoon.
Sally: So when is the wedding?
Andy: Next month.
Sally: How long will you be gone?
Andy: Probably a week.
Sally: Well, I’m sure you’ll have a great time. Just don’t
get sunburned! Hawaii
Today’s Mission
When is Andy’s sister’s wedding?
Conversation A(Andy comes into Tony’s office.)
Tony: Hi, Andy. How’s it going?
Andy: I have to take a trip.
Tony: A trip! That’s great!
Andy: No, it’s not. You know I don’t like to travel.
Tony: So why do you have to take a trip?
Andy: My sister is getting married. In Hawaii.
Tony: Hawaii! That’s a great place. You can swim, relax
on the beach,
play golf . . .
Andy: That part will be fun. But getting there isn’t going
to be any fun.
Conversation B
Tony: Getting there will be no problem. There are lots
of flights to Hawaii. When do you need to go?
Andy: In a couple of weeks. My sister’s wedding is October
12.
Tony: Then you need to buy your ticket now.
Andy: OK. I’ll leave on the 9th. How long does it take
to get there?
Tony: Well, first you have to fly to Los Angeles. You’ll
change planes there. Hawaii is a four and a half-hour flight
from L.A.
Conversation C
Andy: That’s a long flight.
Tony: No, it’s not! My flight to Taiwan was 14 hours.
Andy: So how much will a ticket cost?
Tony: Do you want to fly economy class or first class?
Andy: Economy.
Tony: OK, I’ll check the fares on the computer. Oh, wait.
When do you want to come back?
Andy: October 15.
Tony: All right. Let’s see what I can do for you.
Today’s Mission
How long will Andy wait in Salt Lake City?
Conversation A(Tony is checking his computer.)
Tony: Here’s a good fare.
Andy: How much?
Tony: $550.
Andy: Is that the cheapest ticket?
Tony: I think so. You’ll leave in the morning on October
9. You’ll fly to Salt Lake City and change planes.
Andy: Can’t I just take a nonstop flight to L.A.?
Tony: There are no direct flights to L.A. from here.
Andy: Oh. How long do I have to wait in Salt Lake City?
Tony: Not long. About an hour.
Conversation B
Tony: Then you fly to L.A.
Andy: How long will I be in L.A.?
Tony: About two hours. You’ll need that much time to find
your gate. The L.A. airport is pretty big.
Andy: I hope I don’t get lost.
Tony: You won’t. The airline people can help you.
Andy: That’s good. What time is my flight to Hawaii?
Tony: It leaves at 3:30. Then you’ll arrive in Hawaii about
6 p.m. Just in time for dinner!
Conversation C
Andy: Six p.m.? I thought you said the flight to Hawaii
was four and a half-hours.
Tony: It is. Hawaii time is three hours behind L.A. They’re
in different time zones.
Andy: Oh.Tony: Here’s the flight schedule. Does it look
OK?
Andy: (looking at the schedule) It looks fine. (sigh) I
guess I really have to go.
Tony: You’ll have a great time, Andy.
Andy: But what if something goes wrong?
Tony: Don’t worry. Everything will be just fine.
Today’s Mission
Why was Andy late getting to Salt Lake City?
Conversation A(A couple of weeks later, Sally comes into
Tony’s office.)
Sally: Hi, Tony. Here’s one of your travel magazines. You
left it in my shop yesterday.
Tony: Oh, thanks.
Sally: I looked at the pictures in it. They were great.
I hope Andy takes some nice pictures in Hawaii.
Tony: Me, too. I told him to take a camera.
Sally: He left this morning, didn’t he?
Tony: Yes. His flight was at 9:00. I picked him up and
took him to the airport at 7:00.
Conversation B
Sally: So early?
Tony: Yes. These days, you have to be at the airport about
two hours before your flight.
Sally: Oh. And did he get on the plane all right?
Tony: I think so. I helped him check in. After he got his
boarding passes, I came home.
Sally: I’m sure he’ll have a great time.
Tony: He will. Maybe this trip will get him excited about
traveling.
Sally: He sure isn’t excited about it now.
Conversation C(A few minutes later, the phone rings.)
Tony: Good morning, Tony’s Travel.
Andy: Hi, Tony.
Tony: Andy! Where are you?
Andy: Salt Lake City. I missed my flight to L.A.
Tony: What happened?
Andy: Something was wrong with the plane. We were late
getting to Salt Lake.
Tony: But the airline staff changed your tickets, didn’t
they? They put you on other flights?
Andy: Yes. Now I won’t get to Hawaii until 9 p.m.
Tony: But at least you’ll get there!
Today’s Mission
What did the airline lose?
Conversation A(The next afternoon, Sally comes into Tony’s
office.)
Sally: Hi, Tony. I just thought I’d stop in and see if
you’d heard from
Andy.
Tony: (yawns) I have.
Sally: What’s wrong? Didn’t you sleep well last night?
Tony: I did—until about 2 a.m. That’s when Andy called.
Sally: Why did he call you so late?
Tony: He forgot about the time difference. It was only
10 p.m. in Hawaii.
Sally: Was something wrong?
Tony: Yes. The airline lost his luggage.
Sally: Oh, dear.
Conversation B
Sally: What did you tell him?
Tony: I told him to talk to the airline.
Sally: Did he have his luggage claim check?
Tony: He had to look for it, but he found it.
Sally: So then everything was OK.
Tony: No. Andy called me again 20 minutes later.
Sally: Why?
Tony: He didn’t pack his toothbrush and things in his carryon.
He wanted to know what to do.
Conversation C
Sally: What did you tell him?
Tony: I told him to talk to the airline. They have things
like that for passengers whose luggage gets lost.
Sally: Did he ever get his luggage back?
Tony: I don’t know. (phone rings)
Tony: (answers the phone) Tony’s Travel. Tony speaking.
Andy: Hi, Tony! I finally got my luggage.
Tony: That’s good. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay now.
Andy: I’ll try. There’s just one problem.
Tony: What’s that?
Andy: It’s raining.
Today’s Mission
When did Andy get home?
Conversation A(A week later, Tony comes into Sally’s shop.)
Sally: Hi, Tony. What can I get you?
Tony: Just a cup of coffee.
Sally: And a cinnamon roll? I just started selling them
yesterday.
Tony: Sure. That would be great.
Sally: Have you seen Andy yet?
Tony: No, I haven’t. I think he got back late last night.
Sally: I haven’t seen him either. I’m keeping an eye on
his shop. When he comes in, I’ll go over and see him.
Tony: I hope he enjoyed Hawaii.
Sally: Me, too.
Conversation B(A few minutes later, Andy comes in.)
Sally: Andy! Welcome home!
Andy: Thanks! I got home after midnight last night. (yawns)
I’m still a little sleepy.
Sally: Did you have a good time?
Andy: Yes and no.
Tony: How were the flights back?
Andy: Pretty good. At least all of them were on time. But
the airline lost my luggage again!
Tony: That’s too bad. But it happens sometimes.
Andy: But twice on one trip?
Tony: You’re just lucky, I guess.
Andy: Or unlucky! Conversation C
Sally: So tell us about your trip. Did you go to the beach?
Andy: Yeah. On the one day it didn’t rain.
Sally: At least you didn’t get sunburned!
Andy: True. And the hotel I stayed in was nice.
Tony: That’s good.
Andy: And I walked around some. All in all, it was kind
of fun.
Tony: Does that mean you’re going to take another trip?
