Zhang Jie, an 18-year-old piano student, has become an
object of envy among her peers. This month, she will embark
on a four-year course at the Norwegian State Academy of
Music, thanks to a summer camp she attended in Stavanger
- Norway's fourth largest city - last year.
"The many concerts and classes (at the camp) widened
my horizon and ex-posed me to a totally different learning
experience," Zhang said yesterday.
Hopefully, more students like Zhang will benefit from
an annual project - launched last year by the Royal Norwegian
Consulate General in Shanghai for local music students and
professionals.
The consulate invites music-dance students and young
professionals - aged between 16 and 25 years - to the Stavanger
International Summer Academy, a part of the International
Chamber Music Festival held in August.
The camp students attend master classes given by top-notch
artists and get free tickets to all concerts at the festival.
This year, three students majoring in piano, violin and
cello from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and two young
dancers have been invited to the August 16-24 camp.
"We wish to expose young Norwegian artists to Chinese
artists," John Dag Hutchison, the Norwegian consul,
said.
